Strange Ghost

Medium format promo photography for Brum-based duo Strange Ghost.

Husband-and-wife duo Christopher and Ayomide Donald, under the name Strange Ghost, released the Stagger EP in 2017, an apocalyptic lava flow of afrobeat, house, punk and pop that went on to become one of of my most-listened-to records of the year.

Whether it’s speaking truth to power, viewing the world through a redemptive lens, or showing a healthy disregard for genre conventions, there’s lots of reasons to admire Strange Ghost beyond their killer sound.

I was asked to shoot some promo shots for Strange Ghost in the adopted home we all call Birmingham. It was also the first work I was ever paid to do as a photographer, and so a privilege on many levels.

I used medium format Portra 400 on my Rolleicord V for the shoot, due to its lovely retro glow. I tried and failed to get some good double exposures, but Chris played around with the originals a bit afterwards, overlaying many of them to get the liminal vibe we were after.

Later in the 2017, Strange Ghost found airtime on BBC Introducing and played live at the Midlands Arts Centre, where these photos were taken. You can enjoy four films also created for the project here.
